The United States is facing the worst abuse towards perscription medicines ever. There are other methods of treatment for back pain. See DRX9000 and ISCS.
According to recently release national data, as presented by Gary Franklin, M.D.,MPH; to the national Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the United States is facing the worst “man-made epidemic” of opioid abuse in the history of modern medicine. There have been over 200,000 deaths from prescription opioids and many hundreds of thousands of overdose admissions, and millions of individuals are addicted or dependent on prescription opioids. These numbers do not include the illicit chemical Opioids, such as Heroin, which also account for thousands of deaths per year; our current “Heroin Epidemic.”
Dr. Franklin, Vice President of Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing, went on to state, “This (prescription opioids) is an extremely serious epidemic, and while I know that taking care of these patients is not an easy thing to do, we need to reduce overdose deaths and admissions, and we have ways to reduce trends which we all need to embrace.” He, and many others, contends that the most important step toward reducing the epidemic is to stop prescribing opioids for the wrong indications.
Opioid medications are derived from Opium, the black-tarry substance secreted by the Scarlet Poppy which was originally found to flourish in Turkey and other Middle Eastern nations; but is grown in many countries since. From the Opium, the chemical substances Morphine and Heroin were originally discovered, and so began a blessing and scourge for the world communities…a blessing because it alleviates pain and a curse because it is heavily abused and is addictive. Morphine, extracted and refined at the time of our Great Rebellion (The Civil War) was found most useful in alleviating the pain of so many wounded soldiers; and has been very useful since that time in pain management.
The only catch was (and is) that Morphine is also very addictive; and soon discovered after soldiers returned to their communities after the Civil War. About 30 years after the war, Morphine was further broke down into Heroin in Europe and was in actuality thought to be a non-addictive compound…an answer to the addictive effects of Morphine; and we all know how that went, Heroin became one of the most abused and addictive substances ever unleashed on our world.
Beginning in the 20th century, scientists/pharmacologists discovered a number of Opioid compounds, modified extracts from the Opium Poppy, that have continued to be utilized to this date for pain management; such as Codeine, Hydrocodone Hycodan, (Vicodin), Hydromorphone (Dilaudid), and Oxycodone (Percodan, Tylex). It has become increasingly evident that these medications are abused in the treatment of many nonspecific musculoskeletal disorders, especially chronic lower back pain, headaches, and disorders such as fibromyalgia; and “people with these indications are on chronic (long term) opioids, and they have become disabled, and they are spilling over into Social Security and disability systems,” Dr. Franklin said, and which have been evident in national statistics on the subject.
Medically, physicians prescribe opioids to deaden pain, stop coughing; and to control diarrhea. Non-medically, users self-prescribe opioids for the euphoria, to drown out their emotional pain, or to try to feel normal. A major effect of opioids has to do with pleasure. Just as pain is a warning signal to keep us from damaging ourselves, so pleasure is a signal to encourage us to do something that is good for the body and the mind. And just as endorphins are released naturally, to block pain in the part of the brain dealing with pain, so they are released to activate what is called the reward/pleasure center in the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain. As opioids artificially activate the reward system by slotting into the receptor sites on the receiving sites on the receiving neurons meant for the endorphins.
They send out false signals of pleasure, and with continued use of the opioids, the addiction process begins. Opioids, unlike the body’s own endorphins, affect other organs and tissues besides the pain and pleasure centers. This process is very important, as it is responsible for the need for continued use of the drug if not stopped early, and is usually the cause of overdose on the drug.

Now, it is important to know that there are many benefits of opioids; particularly in their use after major surgery and to lessen chronic spinal pain, etc.; but it is also important to know that their prescriptions are increasingly provided for pain that can be dealt with by other types of non-addictive medications, or through other means. Dr. Franklin’s studies have indicated that 30 percent of patients in a physician’s office have Opioid Use Disorder or are severely dependent. This does not include the many individuals who obtain the prescription opioid pills illicitly, and never go to a physician.
People can get addicted to these painkillers that are perscribed for back pain. Luckily, there are alternative methods of treatment for such pain.
Integrity Life Sciences delivers a multitude of orthotic treatment options to address one of the most costly systemic ailments in the world, chronic low back and neck pain. Our advanced solution begins with the Integrity Spinal Care System (ISCS) ™ and its proprietary iELCiPS Technology™. The ISCS non-surgical spinal decompression modality systems are engineered to provide pain relief for compressive and degenerative conditions of the spine. Specifically, conditions that may be treated include: neck pain and back pain associated with herniated discs, protruding discs, degenerative disc disease, posterior facet syndrome, and sciatica. It achieves these effects through decompression of intervertebral discs, that is, unloading due to distraction and positioning.
As a compliment to the ISCS, Integrity offers the very effective Integrity Gel Support Brace™. Our advanced lumbar support brace is a fitting compliment to non-surgical spinal decompression therapy and was designed as an adjunct therapy for those suffering from back pain due to disc related conditions. The Integrity Gel Support Brace may be used with or without Integrity’s non-surgical spinal decompression systems and is an excellent treatment option for the patient to use at home.
