Some people swear by chiropractic manipulation. So one would think that earlier physical therapy might be efficacious as well. But a recent study casts some doubt on the value of physical therapy within the first few weeks after the onset of lower back pain. In a study of 220 lower back pain sufferers, early physical therapy only modestly improved functional ability (to bend, walk, lift objects, etc.) when measured after one month, but even this modest improvement did not persist when measured at one year. Back pain intensity was unchanged. So while early physical therapy seems to be well-tolerated, it didn't produce a meaningful improvement in most patients.
