Back pain and shoulder discomfort is not often associated with children in elementary or even high school, but excessive weight and improperly worn backpacks are increasing these types of injuries.
The West Texas Rehabilitation is reminding parents and students how to avoid injuries with a few tips to follow.
“We want to bring awareness to the safety hazards of having an over packed and improperly worn backpack,” said Joy Gilbert, a pediatric occupational therapist at the rehab.
Some signs to look for are aching backs and shoulders, tingling and numbness in arms and neck soreness, Gilbert said.
Another sign to look for is if the child is having difficulty lifting or is standing funny from lifting their backpack, she said.
More than 2,000 backpack-related injuries were treated at hospital emergency rooms, doctor’s offices, and clinics in 2007, according to a survey done by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
“A child’s backpack should weigh no more than about 10 percent of their body weight, but a lot of kids...carry too much.,” she said.
Children are not advised to undergo treatment for their back, but in several instances, adults also carry heavy things similar to how children carry heavy backpacks. The carrying of such heavy objects can cause low back pain, and low back pain can be treated with non- surgical spinal decompression.
